Retail Challenge Day

Five of our Year 11 pupils won the Hammerson Retail Challenge Day at Leeds Kirkgate Market on Friday 1st July.

Pupils were selling homemade cakes and offering professional Henna. They competed against five other schools in Leeds and made the most profit of £170 on the day.

We are very proud of all our pupils involved and there were lots of comments on the day about how professionally they worked during the trading hours.

We appreciate all the support from anyone who visited the stall, as profits will go to our selected House Charities.

Year 11 Prom

The Year 11 prom was another huge success this year as pupils came together at the Hilton Hotel to spend some quality time together after their GCSE exams.

There were awards handed out on the evening to honour pupils who had excelled throughout their time at Carr Manor Community School. Our ex-pupils, who appeared on Britain’s Got Talent as Mythical PSM, also gave a surprise performance on the evening.

Year 8 Graduation

All pupils transitioned to their new year groups in June and Year 8 had a graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

Pupils were awarded for kindness, leadership and their attendance to Flexible Learning clubs, amongst other accolades. It was a great opportunity for pupils to reflect on their time so far at Carr Manor Community School and older pupils also passed on their advice regarding what to expect in Year 9.

Year 9 Make The Grade

In October 2015, 13 Year 9 pupils from Carr Manor Community School started a journey working with Business Mentors from Asda and Capsticks Solicitors of Leeds.

Every couple of months, pupils visited their Mentors place of work to learn about team building and communication skills. All pupils and Business Mentors were set different Make The Grade Mentoring tasks to see how they worked together as a team showing resilience, motivation, independence and confidence.

Wednesday 8th June 2016 saw all parties come together for a final celebration event held at Carr Manor, lead by Melissa Garrett, Project Manager from A-Head Partnership in Leeds.

Pupils were asked to design and make a hat for the Queens birthday showing their individual talents and flair. To close the event all pupils were awarded with a certificate and trophy from their mentors for completing this Mentoring scheme. All pupils were a credit to our school showing their commitment to all tasks given to them. A big well done to the pupils for all their involvement and hard-work.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan Visit

On Thursday 9th June, Leeds Rhinos player Jamie Jones-Buchanan visited Carr Manor to work with pupils in a Performing Arts class.

Jamie, along with our pupils, is taking part in a show called ‘Leeds Lads’ which is performed at the Carriageworks Theatre on Monday 20th June. The show looks at Leeds’ connection with the first World War, delving into the personal stories of the men and women who fought (and died) during the ‘war to end all wars’.

During his visit, Jamie spoke to pupils about his preparation for his first stage role, explaining how there are similarities to his vastly successful sporting career. Pupils performed their pieces in-front of Jamie ahead of the live performance.

It was a brilliant chance for pupils to work with Jamie in area that is relatively new to him and we really appreciate him taking the time to visit us here at Carr Manor Community School.

Year 11 Stand Down

Our Year 11 pupils ‘stood down’ on Friday 27th May, where they received their class of 2011 – 2016 t-shirts to be signed by fellow pupils and members of staff.

Whilst good luck wishes were passed around, pupils reflected on their time at Carr Manor Community School. “I’ll miss Carr Manor because of all the amazing support you get from all the teachers” said Year 11 pupil Bethany Townend, “I just want to thank everyone for helping me out, especially in this last key year.”

Pupils sat their English Literature exam in the morning, not knowing they would be standing down that afternoon. “It is the school tradition to surprise our Year 11 pupils with the time and date of 'stand down,’ said Executive Principal Simon Flowers. “This adds to the occasion which includes a brief assembly, shirt signing, group photos and a final year group photo.”

It was an emotional day for the Year 11’s as they posed for last photos with Coaches, fellow pupils and staff members they have built relationships with over the past years.

“It is always a privilege to be at a Carr Manor Community School Year 11 stand down - this year the class of 2011-2016 had an emotional send off creating a special set of memories for all involved. We are very proud of them and their achievements.”

The Year 11’s also enjoyed a BBQ and football tournament in May before their exam season started. Pupils were very appreciative that the events were organised solely for them, as this helped them relax and re-focus during their vital last year at school.

Pupils will still be attending school to follow their new ‘stand down’ revision timetable and sit their GCSE’s before their leavers’ prom at the end of June, which is being held at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds.

We wish all our Year 11’s the best of luck with the remainder of their GCSE exams.
